Family fearful after son found dead in northwest alley | Calgary Herald

The death of a young man in what’s believed to be a targeted attack near his northwest home has compelled his family to leave the neighbourhood, a religious leader says.

“They’re afraid because they don’t know the motive,” said Abdi Hersy, a Calgary imam who has been supporting the man’s loved ones.

Murad Omar, a 23 year old of Somali descent, was the man discovered dead at about 3 a.m. Friday in an alley behind 8th Street N.W. in Rosedale, following reports of gunshots, Hersy confirmed.

Omar’s death is the second loss Calgary’s Somali community is facing in a matter of days. Abdullahi Ahmed, 27, was gunned down at a New Year’s party in a shooting that injured six other people.

Hersy said both bodies may be released by authorities Monday morning, which would allow grieving families to hold prayers and a funeral for the two young men at the same time in the afternoon.

“It’s two Muslim people dying and they will both have the same destination anyways,” said Hersy, who wasn’t sure if the men knew each other.
