More homeowners come forward with claims against bankrupt Calgary contractor

The number of consumer complaints against a bankrupt Calgary contractor has grown, with 24 former customers alleging Bruce Hopkins collected more than $3 million for unfinished renovations or projects that were never started.

Service Alberta Minister Stephen Khan said his department is closely examining the complaints for any breaches of the provincial regulations that govern contractors who collect advance payments, but Hopkins’ former customers and the Opposition critic said the case shows the rules need to be stricter.

“We’ve got two investigators doing an assessment and we’re in communication with the Calgary Police Service,” Khan said in an interview.
